Originally a mining town, Julian has retained that old town charm. High in the Cuyamaca mountains and about an hour out of San Diego, Julian is one of few places in Southern California you can go to experience seasonal change. Realizing this importance, Julian celebrates each season as it comes, with street fairs in the spring and summer, holiday festivals in the winter and, of course, the apple harvest in the fall.

Living in Julian is quite unlike living in any other town. As a designated historical district, all of the store fronts are original and look like they came right out of a picture book. Tourists come in to see gold mines and have a drink at the soda fountain. The antique shopping here is great, as are the carriage rides all around town. Visitors stay in quaint bed and breakfasts.

Residents have it even better, though. During the week, when the tourist flow has slowed, the town reverts to a relaxing flow. Residents who live around town meet their neighbors for coffee at their local breakfast joints, while those who live outside of town ride horses on some of the nearby trails.

The homes inside the town of Julian tend to be modest but architecturally designed to match the styling of the historic town. Those outside the town are larger, more grandiose creations that play on the beauty of the surrounding land with picture windows, indoor fireplaces and huge front porches.

In addition to single family, permanent homes, there is also Julian real estate available for vacation rentals, secondary homes and stables. Many lovers of the area choose to buy an empty plot of land and develop it on their own. Home sales are infrequent, nevertheless, the average sales price reported in February 2006 of a Julian home was $307,000.
