East San Diego Real Estate

East San Diego has the seemingly conflicting role of being one of the oldest areas of suburban San Diego, while just starting to come into its own. East San Diego was built up mostly right after World War II as a place for young families to live with their kids. Apartment buildings and condominiums were eventually built alongside the homes. Today, the same sorts of people and families live in East San Diego. It's a great place to buy a first home or start raising a family.

Much of East San Diego is ethnically diverse and respectful of different cultures. For instance, the area around San Diego State University is planning for a large urban park in the neighborhood. The park, to be called the South Chollas Park, aims to artistically celebrate different ethnicities, resembling the Spanish Village in Balboa Park.

The area has recently received other substantial improvements. The College Grove Shopping Center, for instance, was recently renovated and re-opened as the Marketplace at College Grove, including several major convenience stores. Much of East San Diego is centered around easy access to necessities, so it's generally easy to walk to do your daily or weekly shopping.

Much of East San Diego has a renewed focus on education. The San Diego Community College District sponsors a continuing education facility here, and San Diego State University runs a community center in City Heights. A new library is set to open here as well.

Children growing up in East San Diego have a variety of after school options available to them. Head Start has a strong program here. Many kids join the Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts through their local schools. And even more join an organized sports team—especially Bobby Sox softball or Little League baseball.
Home prices here vary by neighborhood, but most single family homes cost between $350,000 and $700,000. The average sales price of a East San Diego home or condo was $394,220 in February 2006. East San Diego real estate is a great investment for young families and singles alike.
